LSE econ has currently more than 85 students in the fifth year and beyond (excluding the students who went to the 09-10 job market). Furthermore, there are 20 students in the fourth year. It seems there is a huge bottleneck there. Why? How is it possible?

I know that some (~10) of the students listed as 5+ were on the market this year and got jobs. Also, some of the 5+ would be considered end of 4th year in US (they did an MSc at LSE, and were therefore "allowed" to do the "fast track" version of the PhD, which is one year shorter). This accounts for another 10-20. The others are actual 5+.
LSE admits anywhere between 20-40 PhDs in econ every year.

Francesco Caselli is no good. He brings the place down.

The main problem seems to be the spelling. How exactly does one pronounce LSE anyway? Lissee? Lizzee? El-see?

LSE no good. Faculty no care what about placement of phd graduates. ranking on publication per faculty only count. Thursby show several year ago that not significant difference between department rank X and those rank (X+20) or (X-20). interesting for you but LSE no good. ranking generally not too reliable for schools under approx 10-20 anyway for can change base on factors used in study or change in faculty composition. make good sense but LSE no good.
