Does anyone know which universities have instituted hiring freezes that prevent their economics department from hiring? I heard this is true for:
Cornell
Brown
University of California System
Minnesota for non-essential hiring

I heard Boston University, but treat it as an unconfirmed rumor.

The UC and CSU systems are in a quasi hiring freeze. I believe the positions posted are not funded, but the schools are expecting funding to fill necessary positions. Don't be surprised if they don't hire.

There's another thread going that's compiling a list.

These are two different topics. A hiring freeze does not necessarily imply a closed position.

"These are two different topics. A hiring freeze does not necessarily imply a closed position."
This is correct in at least some cases. I'm now government demand side. When I was hired there was a freeze in place, but a reasonable expectation that it would be lifted in a few months. The offer I was made was essentially a promise that I would recieve a formal offer as soon as the freeze was lifted.

Here is a link to an article from
http://www.usnews.com/blogs/paper-trail/2008/11/7/more-schools-impose-hiring-freezes-2.html that lists more schools. I started this thread because I am, and I believe others are, interested to know which schools are not hiring for whatever reason, be it because they have filled the position (closed position) or because of budget constraints. I would prefer verifiable rumors, i.e links to news articles or even better websites of the relevant institution. Thank you for the demand side comment, it puts into perspective whether these issues are worth worrying about.Posted 1 year ago # -

There is U.S. News and World report article that lists more schools, but EJMR don't seem to allow links here, I guess they want only unverifiable rumors on this website
