Hiring Freezes

To quote the article directly: "while [Harvard] faculty searches are not frozen, Smith urged department heads to carefully weigh whether the positions are critical to Harvard’s academic program."

But clearly the decline in endowments are pressing all the major private schools. Their presidents call for hiring freeze.

I was told by someone from a teaching college a couple months ago that they were not hiring this year because of decline in their (modest) endowment, so there may already have been an effect from this in the form of reduced JOE ads.

In short, unlike the stock market recovers, hiring could worsen badly.

I say, let's stock up this year, and then we can all freeze hiring for a couple of years. We've already arranged SF, called for applications, the costs are sunk. But next year, we're flexible enough to really save by skipping the job market altogether. (Provided we've hired enough people this year!)

The costs of arranging travel to SF and calling for applications are very small. The big costs are paying for flyouts, a new faculty member's salary, and faculty time in the interview/flyout stages.

The best reason to hire this year is that many other places won't be hiring.

Does someone know for sure what is going on in CA? I keep reading that they won't hire, but no school has officially canceled its search. Someone from the UC system please.

Santa Cruz canceled their search. I got a notification via email a couple of days ago.
