In my mind, I am envisioning a version of the WPA/CCC (you know, from the New Deal?) for young unemployed economists. What would that look like? Perhaps we can all draw up a proposal and submit it for funding from Congress as part of the next stimulus package.

<< here is some news from an insider on the Harvard situation: the hiring freeze only applies to staff and temporary positions, NOT to faculty hiring. The economics department has just received approval to make 2 hires at the assistant professor level this year. >>
That was last week. On Monday, the FAS decided to cut from 50 to 15 the number of faculty hired this year. It's not clear how many are left to the Econ department.

Up to now, it is sure that 21 states have hiring freezes.

You cannot say 21 for sure. Louisiana has not declared an official hiring freeze, so it might be only 20.

Just in: Harvard is freezing hiring for all those without Harvard or MIT degrees.
