I do not care whether my papers get published or not. They are widely read, that is good enough for me. And I hate the tyrany of journal referees. Promotion and money is not everything in life...

Seriously? Care about social welfare? Did I end up in the wrong forum and this is a discussion between political scientists? I thought as an economic agent I only care about furthering my own welfare within the laws and limitations of my current society. If there will be some positive externalities to society, such as furthering knowledge, so be it, but as long as I maximize my own utility I don't really care (yes, and there may be some outliers who's utility function includes social welfare, but on average it doesn't - just take a look in the wall street journal).

Regarding Selten: yes he did not care then as well.

As far as I know, Selten's idea on SPE was published in 1975 in the International Journal of Game Theory, not exactly a bad outlet. It doesn't seem to me that he was really outside the system.

Do you think that an idea that won someone a nobel prize is good enough, ex post, for IJGT?
    That is quite a statement!

I don't think it is advisable to judge according to today's standards.
IJGT was founded in 1971 by Oskar Morgenstern (as in von Neumann-Morgenstern) and during its first few years all the superstars in the field published there. 1975 was also one of its first few years. My guess is that it was perceived back then as a journal that even such a major contribution could be sent to.

^ Good point, just please don't start a discussion on journal rankings as of 1975.

Just checked Selten's CV, he has a 1978 QJE. What a load of crap.
