    Econometrica ruled back then, Econometrica rules now.
    It appears also that the Economic Journal and Economica were far more decent then than they are now.

    Seriously? Care about social welfare? Did I end up in the wrong forum and this is a discussion between political scientists? I thought as an economic agent I only care about furthering my own welfare within the laws and limitations of my current society. If there will be some positive externalities to society, such as furthering knowledge, so be it, but as long as I maximize my own utility I don't really care (yes, and there may be some outliers who's utility function includes social welfare, but on average it doesn't - just take a look in the wall street journal).

    =======

    A utility function can include many things, including altruistic goods like contributing to society.

    How does the OP know that other economists are focusing on research as a macho "publication game".

    OP is simply a whining loser pretending that he has a higher moral standard than others. Sour grape, to be exact.

    It is very disappointing to hear many of you focusing on research as a macho "publication game" exclusively. Isn't it time to consider ourselves real scientists, focus on the social impact of our research, and derive most of our utility from the relevance of our research to peoples' lives?

    Stupid is an adjective, not a noun.

    Ever noticed all the volunteers who make your life as an academician better? The sponsor of this forum (anonymous). Various anonymous bloggers. The folks behind RePEc (unknowns). Your dissertation committee (no rewards). Referees (anonymous). Etc. Why do they do it? Because they think it is useful, and this is rewarding enough to them. Claim, fortune and babes are not the only thing in life.

    To the self-appointed teacher:

    "stupid" can be used as a noun in an informal sense.
    Please check your dictionary.

    What a stupid!
