What fields are having the hardest time getting calls? In your office/department do you notice some fields getting lots of interviews while others are getting few?

A school got one of our theory candidates, dragged him into the street, and set him on fire

so theory's not doing so well for us

When I first approached my advisor with a potential diss. topic, he said that only the top 10 schools can do micro theory or econometrics. Therefore, I did something else. These fields are always tough even for those at the top, but especially for those that aren't.

I wish I had been steered more strongly away from theory, but both of my advisors really liked what I was doing, so I thought I'd be okay. wrong.

Maybe you can find a cool way to apply your theory to another field, or devise an experiment that tests that theory. Then you can rebrand yourself as some other field.
