There is a Sociologist in our dept who is continually slagging off Economists.

    How to I counteract this?

If you have to ask on the Internets, perhaps you should go sling fries somewhere. I bet you'll ask your advisor for a dissertation topic, too.

Point out that he is a sociologist and that no one listens to him for a reason. he is full of bullshit.

If he is raising specific criticisms, you should think about those criticisms and respond to them.

Ask if he makes more or less than PhD students in your department. In the likely event that he is unsure, help him find this information. Suggest that he enroll.

Tell him that a regression is no longer a frontier technique, and that there is a problem called "endogeneity" which sociologists seem unable to confront. Explain to him that his life's work is useless crap. Give him a tissue and leave him alone.

^ Oh congratulations, you can critique 20 year old macro! Perhaps you should have enrolled in a school where you learned something published after 1990.

^Truth hurts, hoss? It's okay, I can use vaseline next time.

Signed: Your friendly neighborhood applied microeconomist, who actually couldn't care less about macro and knows about endogeneity.
