    It depends on your skin color. If you are white then Aus will work out for you. Otherwise, stick to USA.

    G8 does not mean anything. Monash is a G8. But almost all their recent recruits are Monash PhD. Who wants to be a part of so much inbreeding? Unless it is ANU/Melbourne or NSU, stay in USA.

    once you are out of the US, it is hard to return. In this case, even an LAC job is better

    ^Why is it that economists reject the most basic principles of economics when it comes to their own profession? The major thing that determines whether you can return is good publications. If you publish well, you will have no problems returning. If you don't publish well, you will have no job in the US anyway, because you will get fired. Chances are you'll publish a lot better at a major research university, Australian or not, than at a LAC.

    Idealistically speaking, yes. But try coming to Australia. I'm here and I speak from experience.
