Tan Min's age is a borderline case for retirement or another term. He has been heading SHUFE for a long time. Usually there should be rotation such that it won't become a one-man show. However, recently the rumor is that he made a case to the people upstairs in Beijing that he needs another term because the reform at SHUFE is at a critical phase. Having him for another term will make sure the reform will succeed.
Now, despite all the nasty politics and grudge out there against Tan Min and Tian Guoqiang, I really hope the reform at SHUFE succeeds. In that case, they will leave some sort of legacy and moves the profession forward at least somewhat in China. And I am not affiliated with SHUFE.
confirmed? People always said that as Tan's position is unsure, and so is Tian's.
People at SHUFE told me Tian's not leaving, perhaps just flirting with CKGSB to gain some bargaining power. CKGSB would offer him a higher explicit salary, but not the power and resources to run a program like SoE at SHUFE. In China, control over resources can bring you payoff under the table. Also, because CKGSB is private, if Tian moves there, it's likely Tian can't hold on to the title (and stipend) of Changjiang Scholar, because that title is part of a government program.
His principal supporter, Tan Min, will serve another term as the head of SHUFE. So it looks like Tian will remain there.
