Falk was once at Will's show, he tried to explain some of the results of his research, of course he failed spectacularly and I am sure he will never go to such a show again. If you talk to a laymen audience, at least you need time and undivided attention to explain something, which you will never get.

I agree that it's very difficult in the current format. However, if you look at political talk shows in some other countries, you'll see that it's perfectly possible to invite a panel of 2-3 experts who have a decent discussion, without any of the typical political talking heads participating.
With five goddam evening talk show slots in the ARD, why can't they have at least ONE with such a format? Have one host, and let two economists discuss the Euro crisis for an hour in a calm studio atmosphere. I guarantee that every viewer will learn something. Add only one random politician to the mix, and will be a completely useless show.
depends, if good economists are invited, who are true experts in the field they discuss, not Rocholl discussing stimulus packages or Wieland telling us something about the banking system, who do not have any lobby interest they have to take care of, this could work. This will however never happen, mainly because the viewer can not distinguish between a good economist and a bad one and party because the vast majority of good economists is so disgusted by TV talk shows they would never go there. Remember why that works so well in the US: Harvard is full of excellent economists and everybody knows Harvard is great, so the TV stations invite the Harvard guys, because their viewers want that. Such a selection mechanism does not work in Germany, because people are not aware of the quality differences between universities and because these quality differences are a lot smaller in Germany than in the US.
just imagine: one sunday evening, Maug, Inderst, Krahnen and Rocholl discuss how to recapitalize banks and how to stimulate lending and the next week, Wieland, Müller and Rudi talk about fiscal multipliers in distressed countries.
We have subsidized public TV channels exactly to provide this type of high level education irrespective of the number of viewers and all they do is give us entertainment. Tragedy.

And I dont think that Spiegel has called Ferguson a top economists, which would have been pretty weird given that NF is a historian with at most undergraduate knowledge of economics, which by the way proves that Harvard does NOT guarantee quality contributions once you also consider their history department.
Anyway, the problem of the article is that the author is unable to contribute anything to the issue, all he does is state some superficial facts and quote. Any of my students would be able to put the quotes into context and tell why they make sense or why not. The Spiegel journalists is probably not an economist and therefore prefers not to contribute anything to the article. German journalism is in steep decline, half of their articles are about economics and the economy, why cant they hire competent economists ? Are we so expensive or are the others so cheap ?
