Yeah, I don't understand the point of it. Most of these schools seemed to just interview there for practice, waiting until the AFA to interview again and then make flyout decisions...
I haven't heard from any of schools I'm interested in. Is the market going slow or I'm not the top candidate? It's very weird.

Same here, but that's not really a very large or unbiased sample. The word is that while some top candidates were invited for interviews, it was basically the very, very top candidates that (frankly) will probably still look to the AFA before accepting any offers. These top candidates got all the interviews, but the rest of the candidates really did not. While inviting the top scholar to a flyout is a start, inviting a person who will clearly decline your offer is not really optimal. Hence, the market is moving to the AFA. Earlier in this thread, someone described the top five flyout candidates all declining flyouts to a school because they, too, used the FMA for practice. That is not really a good thing for the FMA job market.

To close down this thread: all schools that interviewed at or around the FMA have already call, scheduled, and probably completed their first round of flyouts.
There is still a slim hope that a) they didn't like the people they flew out or b) nobody accepted their employment offer (this is more likely for the few schools that were filling multiple positions).
On to the AFA market now, which will begin Zoom interviews in December.Not true. There are some teaching schools haven't posted their jobs yet since they did not want to compete for the job market stars who have many choices and are likely to reject them.
These schools aren't on the FMA market, so they aren't really relevant to this thread. FMA schools that interviewed at the FMA or on Zoom in October have moved, done flyouts, and made offers. No more reliable information to share here about FMA Flyouts except maybe which candidates got the job

I think there's no way to know if most schools have made some kind of move, other than a move to the AFA. That, I think, is the majority. I don't count the Southwestern Community College of Western Idaho flying out a guy with two Top Three publications as a legitimate move. I don't really understand why schools would even try doing that, since the FMA is their opportunity to get someone of moderate skill before the AFA schools snatch them up.

This is not true this year. Demand side here and I have talked with some other peer schools that are hiring. Surprisingly few research schools (by FMA standard) are failing their initial searches this year. Excess supply of reasonable quality seasoned candidates.

Agreed! Seasoned candidates are taking all good jobs at the FMA. There should be a policy to make a fairer market for rookies.

In fact, several schools expressed that they are looking for rookies only. Also, why would "the Southwestern Community College of Western Idaho fly out a guy with two Top Three publications"? I doubt they are that stupid and waste valuable resources on a candidate that is only coming to practice.

We are talking about good FMA schools. Why should they hire a rookie while a seasoned candidate has already two rnrs in top 3?
