   I mostly agree with the OP but what about money? Most probably any tenure track AP job that pays !00K+ is a job at a Ph.D granting US department. In order to survive in these places, you will need at least 2-3 top field publications. You can go to a place that nobody has ever heard of but you will make much less. Is there a place which pays 100K+ and let you to survive with a MD publication instead of a JME?

   Old post applies to new time. I am a fresh PhD and got a job offer from you-never-heard college. The school is so rich that they offer me 105k for first year. Their senior AP makes 120k to 140k. I will reach tenure bar in 1-2 years based on my pipeline and their standard - then I will wait for the clock and spend 40 hrs a week hiking.

   Econ phd who switched to business discipline. Money is double. Colleagues are happy people. Publishing is easier and can actually affect the world. Teaching is a little harder, but still easy if you have a backbone.

   Yet my econ dept colleagues look down on me, if they disdain to look at me at all. Thank god.

   I will say that none of these are my department. Beyond that, I shouldn't reveal much more as I have already had a couple people email me asking if I wrote this. Am I the only scotch swilling, gambling, outdoorsy, lazy macroeconomist out there?

   Mine also business school. They pay well considering their junk rank in econ. Similar ranked econ dept would pay half.

   This post is so true. I feel so fortunate to be a LRM tenured prof with no pressure and with a spouse/extended family who makes decent money.

   I have only one point of potential disagreement with OP and that depends on what s/he means by a crappy journal. So, yes, I agree that it's much better to not focus on the top journals, I prefer to focus my efforts on decent field journals and publish fewer articles, than to publish a lot of articles in things like Eastern Economic Review. (i.e., there's a level of journal below which there's no point to publishing).

    The dream. Getting a 120K AP job where tenure is assured due to low pub requirement, and you just hike all day. If it is in a good location like in California or in Europe/Japan. This is better than being a deadwood in a good department, because there will be more productive people who resent your existence.
