   I have a Ch1nese phd colleague who used to talk trash about the West non-stop. He refused to join lunches with the rest of the department (we are a European school so the faculty phd and professors lunch together). In fact, him and other Ch1nese phds from other department formed their own lunch club where they went together to another cafeteria.

   He came to the Christmas dinner with the other ch1nese phds who proceeded to complain how this was "foreigners' festival and not theirs".

   Now after 6 years of terrible research, he didn't get any US or European flyouts and is heading back to China.

   He finally joined one of our drinks and then presented his takeaway from this experience: I was meant for a top US school but rac1sm kept me from my goal.

   His fellow Ch1nese phds nodded along in agreement.

   A practical problem/consequence is weak communication skills, both writing and speaking.

    This is similar to my experience with them. They self-segregate and rarely interact with non-Chinese colleagues. They even parrot CCP propaganda whenever the conversion goes to current affairs or politics.

    I was so surprised come job market when they expressed their preference to continue their stay in the US. And somehow they believed that they were entitled to US jobs? Ironically, their sense of entitlement is very on brand with America - they did a good job integrating in that respect.

    I am an immigrant and this behavior describes 80% of immigrants.

    Not all immigrants are alike though. At least from my experience, the SE and South Asians I've met have "western" values, are foodies, and well-versed in US pop culture. It sounds like it doesn't matter but it made the difference in parties or the pleasantries around the water cooler. You can't deny that it's easier to interact with an open-minded immigrant. But with the Ch1nese, everything about their identity screams CCP-brand Ch1nese.

    You writing this thread, and some of the responses here show that racism is very much real in the economics profession, and that your made up story of a Chinese PhD student not getting the job they would if they were white might have actually happened to someone.

    I won't be. The West is naive to think that it has eradicated millions of years of genetically programmed racial preferences.
