In what way is a private company funding a maternity benefit you paying for anything? Would you prefer she quit her job and stopped paying all those income and payroll taxes? Would you prefer she had kids and did not take any leave? Kind of sounds like the issue here is not the timing of her pregnancy.
Can't speak for the other poster, but I can speak to having to work harder to make up for women taking parental leave. I don't know about google, but lots of other places don't just hire/reallocate to backfill the missing work. I have yet to see it once on my team over 10+ maternity leaves. Because the team I'm on is majority female including management, unfortunately the pay rules don't account for the fact that I've worked 3 - 9 more months than my colleagues, often covering for their work.
