cool thread
A proof of the Riemann Hypothesis on the horizon.

"During my last summer as a graduate student, I was financially supported by Ashok Vaish. I would like to thank him for his continuous and generous support of Stanford faculty and students."
After the entire department finds out Masullo can't deliver, he convinces a venture capitalist to back him for his final year at Stanford.

After the entire department finds out Masullo can't deliver, he convinces a venture capitalist to back him for his final year at Stanford. What's this? Comes from the thesis?

Can somebody explain to me EJMR's obsession with this guy?
As some said before, sensational Streisand effect. I don't read from the beginning, but basically over time this student seems to have claimed he proved RH and BSD conjecture

According to the Random House Unabridged dictionary, the definition of hypothesis is:
"a proposition, or set of propositions, set forth as an explanation for the occurrence of some specified group of phenomena, either asserted merely as a provisional conjecture to guide investigation (working hypothesis) or accepted as highly probable in the light of established facts."
And here are the synonyms for conjecture:
Syn. 2. surmise, inference, supposition, theory, hypothesis. 4. surmise, suppose, presume. So there is no inherent reason why one chooses one word over the other.
If you want to be led astray, check out the Axiom of Choice ;)

It appears that Riemann stated his conjecture and others, wanting to give it a name, called it the Riemann Hypothesis. So, that is just what it began to be called, and the rest is history. Here is what is said in WIkipedia'e entry on Riemann:
"...it is very probable that all roots are real. Of course one would wish for a rigorous proof here; I have for the time being, after some fleeting vain attempts, provisionally put aside the search for this, as it appears dispensable for the immediate objective of my investigation.
— Riemann's statement of the Riemann hypothesis, from (Riemann 1859). (He was discussing a version of the zeta function, modified so that its roots (zeros) are real rather than on the critical line.)"

ljl. this thread is pretty incredible.
