I’m a broette. I think the only thing that is hard is that the tenure clock requires extremely front loaded investment, so if you have young kids at that exact time, it could be a problem. But other jobs can be like that too.
There are only a few great jobs in this sense. For example, physicians can reduce hours and then ramp them up and there’s no penalty later. I cannot work half time and get my tenure clock doubled.But you also get extra time if you have kids. In fact, one good strategy for broettes is to have kids on the tenure clock to have it extended.
It's not generally a great strategy tenure-wise, especially if it is early in the clock.
7 years while raising a young child doesn't give you more research time than 6 years with no children.
I suppose if you get an extension towards the end of your clock which allows you to wait for journal turnaround times it is beneficial.
