I’m a broette. I think the only thing that is hard is that the tenure clock requires extremely front loaded investment, so if you have young kids at that exact time, it could be a problem. But other jobs can be like that too.
There are only a few great jobs in this sense. For example, physicians can reduce hours and then ramp them up and there’s no penalty later. I cannot work half time and get my tenure clock doubled.
It’s obviously true, the job market was designed with an attendant spouse in mind, due to the requirement to move anywhere, often without a dating pool.
This is all just a problem with rurality though. We should close and consolidate poor universities to continue along the path of urbanization, like every other profession.

But you also get extra time if you have kids. In fact, one good strategy for broettes is to have kids on the tenure clock to have it extended.

Seems to have worked for everyone I know who went through it. Just going off my sample. Papers are sitting with reviewer half the time they are in the process of going through publishing, so getting extra time can be extremely valuable even if you're not producing anything in that time.
