10-30k sign on bonus (for 1 or two years)
20-40k yearly bonus
80-200k in stock compensation (you basically get company shares that you can sell on the market)
That, all together. Amounts to 200-500k yearly depending on your level. 200 for early old grads and 500 for people that negotiated well (with multiple offers) a few years out.

This is a completely delusional take which is propagated by both flyover state people and big city people for different reasons. The young people living in big cities don't have any conception of even semi-frugal living (e.g., insisting on the newest smartphones every year, netflix/spotify/youtubepremium subscriptions being called "CoL") so they insist that their absurdly high salaries are actually just "middle class", "average". Flyover state people on the other hand want to cope and they're wealthy working for some no-name company for peanuts.
Starting salary at google or microsoft is closer to 150k for fresh grads. And it doesnt magically go to 500K in a few years. thats just a lie. You have to be a high performer and get multiple promotions.
Yes, like I said 500k is the upper bound for someone that is senior, that moved, and negotiated really well. If you stay 3 years at the same company without promotions your salary goes up by a small % a year. That is why starting base salary is so important.
Sometimes it can even go down if the contract had a lot of signing bonuses and upfront RSUs, or if the stocks declined and you didn’t get refreshes.
But don’t just trust me, look at levels.fyi, it is pretty accurate.

There are trends and fads that if you don't follow them, you could easily end up not getting tenure. Also, if grants are a part of your job, then you could easily end up working on stuff you don't want to do.

Apart from a minority most research is trash and anyone who has RA'd for a prof or co-authored with people know how the sausage is made. I never have had to massage data to get results in industry. I have seen expert reports by many prof in my job and the quality of their work is shocking. incorrect citations, misleading sources, incorrect deductions. If this is how they are doing their research I would not trust anything that they do.
All the tech giants just laid off 10% and and still think tenure doesn't matter.
Plus if you are good you can clear 500k per year which isn't easy in industry.
