   Help me bro/ettes; you're my only hope!

   I just caught a slew of cheaters using chegg in exams and quizzes in one class. I reached out to my colleagues in Econ and Fin. They have sent over their midterms and finals from last term, and cheating is even more rampant than they (and I) thought.

   So I bought myself a f***ton of paperwork just now. Here's my question: do any of you work at schools with a honor code or academic dishonesty policy that makes reporting easier on faculty? I feel like Columbo writing up these reports, and it's absurd. The punks cheated; throw the book at 'em. Nuff said.

   Anybody know of an honor code or policy like this that I can propose at my institution? I know Washington & Lee takes a hard line, but I think that'll be a little too much for my colleagues outside of econ.

   For all y'all who say let it go: would love to. Problem is that it is now up the food chain. So I can't drop it; would be too noticeable.

   I am now at "how do I cost-minimize this in the future?" stage. Thus the hunt for an alternative policy.

   If the higher ups in the food chain do nothing then that's them saying "let it go"

   Otherwise, give them what they ask for and let the chips fall where they may.

    Not clear what your role is OP. Are you some sort of administrator who has to deal with cheating?
    If you are not, let each faculty deal with their own class.

    If you are, there must be some policy for academic dishonesty on the books somewhere at your school.
    Just write up a report. “There is a lot of cheating, see the summarized data. We could address it in various ways. here are a couple of them. Now it’s the higher ups problem.”

    Now for your own class this semester, you can do something about it. Here is an idea: Tight time constraint; short answer questions. If it is a really big class, grade the hardest questions only. You will still get a better distribution than you got before.

    Cheggs tutors can provide answers to exam questions in almost real time. We had an issue with this in an upper division course last semester. Someone in our department wrote a take home test completely from scratch. The entire test was posted on chegg within an hour, and an answer for every question was posted within 3 hours. Half the class turned in the Chegg responses verbatim. The funniest part is that most of the Chegg answers were incorrect.

    Just an FYI. If you find your assignments on Chegg, have your academic integrity office email the chegg honor code people. They will take your content down and provide you with a shocking amount of information on who posted your assignments and who viewed the answers.

    I'm not being clear: I am dealing with my own class, and as a chair, I also have responsibility over my colleagues' classes in this regard. I'm not trying to figure out what to do this term--I am already doing it. It's that it is a lot of paperwork. Thus I asked:

    I am wondering if anyone has an academic dishonesty policy at their institution that (a) does not require copious amounts of documentation from the faculty, and (b) more or less presumes the cheater guilty once the faculty reports them.

    To repeat: yes, I know how to deal with cheaters in my class. Thank you for your suggestions, many of which are already implemented. I want to make it easier for me (and other faculty at my institution) to turn in and punish cheaters without five hours of paperwork per student. "I caught this dude cheating; suspend him for a year." "Yes sir, thank you, sir." More like that.
