^ What can you expect from a field full of third tier Indian and Chinese talent. Top Indian and Chinese talent go to STEM and finance or tech jobs.
I started my PhD program at the same time as a friend. I was in a top 10 program and they were in a program that was LRM. Their stipend was twice as much as mine and they lived out in the middle of nowhere with a much lower cost of living.
It's easy to claim discrimination against non-URM candidates, but usually there is a reason why certain people get into URM programs in the first place.
How do you view rookies with crazy pubs and people's obsession with R&Rs?At my school we don't prioritize diversity. Instead we are trying to hire the best people we can find each year. Yet, when we hire a women, people on this board note that we are only hiring women. If we hire a man, there is no comment. Our biggest challenge is trying to identify who will be successful in research. This is much harder than teams drafting in the NFL or NBA where that got to see them play college ball. We are trying to infer from a small bit information everyones potential. For the candidates ranking job opportunities is much easier, schools with lower teaching loads, higher pay, and successful senior faculty are the best jobs.
You call it obsession? I call it doing the job, doing research. You dont do research you go teaching, instead you get a good paying job at an R1 university because you are either coming from a prestigious university or you are asian or UR or all of them.
Secondly, being a student in a prestigious university gives you many advantages such as data bank, connections to publish to top journals, invitations to conferences that are made only for prestigious universities, decent pay from your department and from Deloitte foundation too, and so on and on. But, think for a moment about another student from non prestigious universities who are struggling financially because their pay is not enough, Deloitte is biased and gives the money only to those spoiled students from "BIG" universities, have to constantly not get any invitation from JAR and jar like conferences, have their own ideas and develop their own papers and not being just an extension of their advisors' idea as a RA contribution, spend day and nights collecting data manually cause there are no funds from their university and still come up with the same amount of papers, if not more as their spoiled counterpart students from prestigious universities. At the end what is prestige? Its brainwashing, it is advertisement!!
Anyways, after all these you see and asian or a spoiled RA future scientist get your job and then you are ready to trash everything and forget about research because you finally figured out this piece of world is very dirty!!
HK and SG account for about 1/4 of the jobs accepted so far. This will clearly decline as more jobs are posted. In the 1900s the center of academia shifted from Europe to the US. Are we seeing the start of the shift from the US to Asia now? State budgets are battered due to the pandemic, lower revenue and higher expenses. The Big 10 arose because these were rich states, now they are mostly comprised of declining cities with T supporters.
It will matter when STEM academia move from us to Asia. Whatever happens to accounting is inconsequential.
