They may be required but I have barely even read letters from people five years out...
Advanced AP here (4.25 years out) looking to move

Jesus, do you really need LORs beyond the initial job market? Thought your papers and CVs should speak for themselves once you were a few years out.
AP jobs require them. You are applying for the same position as fresh candidates, so you need letters just like they do.
I’ve never looked at a non-JMC LOR and barely looked at a JMCs

If it is a formality, a random mail from some colleague would be enough. I think in the advanced AP market the most important thing is that they knew you beforehand and invite you to apply.
True. Almost always network matters in the senior market.
If you are a superstar, that's a different story. Just think about a FA season for the MVP-caliber NBA player.

Who should I request letters from? I have outstanding third-year and annual reviews, but obviously can't attach my pre-tenure reports to apps (or can I?). Please don't advise me to get a letter from my current chair. Her recent appointment is one of the reasons I wanted to move in the first place.
Also, what's the optimal number of apps I should target? Any advice is much appreciated.pubs?
