   1) Challenge your candidate. Seriously, I don't want to work in an environment where I am not challenged. Only through challenging you can find out whether I understand what I am talking about. And it is fun, and I learn.

   2) Ask about future research. Don't you want to know where I am heading? If not, I feel like you have no strategy for your school.

   3) For heavens sake don't invite me to fill your slots. If you want me, you do not need to interview me first. If you do not want me, why wasting your and my time?

   4) Be on time.

   5) Tell me why your school is the best pick for me.

   6) read the JMP. And by the way, if you do not understand the most basic things, I get a very bad impression about the mean IQ at your school...\

   7) Don't ****ing ask me why I don't have a top publication if you do not have one either or did not have one when you were in my position.

   thanks. Did it ever come to your mind that this is a job MARKET? Of course, you should try to sell your school to me. I don't see what is wrong with that.

   Also, this "arrogant little jerk" will at some point of time write the referee reports for your papers - so better behave and don't insult someone personally.

   If OP has the bargaining power (ie either a superstar from an elite place or during a hot market), then OP is in a position to make demands. Otherwise, OP will be jobless in short order with an attitude like that. People do not interview you from your benefit - they do it for their benefit. And our department will never beg you to take our offer so we will not be convincing you why we are best for you. We are looking for the best match not trying to convince every candidate they should come. We've probably used the revelation principle on you and you probably don't even know it.

    I am neither a prick nor arrogant. And most of my interviews were actually good. But I was only challenged in 10% of my interviews - which I found lame.

    I had the opposite problem. Interview at top b-school: interviewer killed my paper in the first few minutes and then he kept asking variations of the same question

    I can pretty much kill every paper if I really wanted to because all papers have some problems including my own. That's not the point of an interview. The interview is for gathering information that you cant get from reading the JMP or reference letters.

    The more you write, the more I understand your experience. You really are completely clueless.

    One specific issue: yes, there is a point at which we try to sell ourselves. That is AFTER we make offers. Up to that point, we want to be careful about the signals we send, because it is bad behavior to make it sound like an offer is forthcoming when it is not.

    In any case, I've been doing this for many years, have sat through hundreds of AEA interviews, many dozens of job talks etc. But you are sure you know more about it does/should work. So I bow to your superior wisdom.

    This is very, very true.

    That's generally because the department head/dean/etc. haven't decided what position they are actually going to fill.
