My paper forthcoming in top field was rejected. My other paper of great relevance to anyone with a passing interest in global affairs was also rejected. These are solid papers with clean identification and rare hand-collected data. Hard to believe my affiliation does not explain why my best work is somehow insufficient for presentation at this conference. I have published multiple top fields, and have the self-awareness to admit many of my working papers are worthless. But these two are genuinely high quality work. How does this selection process even work?
