I went to a place that was once collegial. I started while there was still a little collegiality, but the head was warring with some of the faculty. We got pressured to choose sides. Then the head was booted but the politics continued: people wanted revenge against those favored by the old head. The dean just wants everyone to get along and ignored the politics.
Now, people are not social. We are trying desperately to bring in new blood to dilute the nastiness. Some of our juniors have moved on and they all seem happier. I'll likely do the same. It has been a toxic place to be. Instead of support and mentorship, I walked into an ambush. I just wanted to do research...
