Why?accountable to the public
You mean it makes them NOT accountable
Asian Bros,
Why is the concern always on the Black students... and not the white people.
It’s not us f@cking you over. It’s them.
Don’t let them pit us against each other. It’s a waste of our time.
-A Black Bro
This is on the money. No one forced Harvard to disproportionately punish Asians to make room for other admits. Why are other ethnic groups less affected by these policies? If Harvard were to disproportionately put the burden on talented Caucasian or J*wish individuals, it would immediately be called out.

If most harvard graduates were asian, it seems likely that the lack of diversity would deter employers, professors, and even applications, and eventually Harvard would lose its edge. It's funny. 3461's sentiments were expressed nearly 100 years ago by the then President of Harvard. The only difference is which group was being targeted:
The summer hotel that is ruined by admitting J-ws meets its fate, not because the J-ws it admits are of bad character, but because they drive away the Gentiles, and then after the Gentiles have left, they leave also.
The more things change, the more they stay the same.
Exactly. It's funny how 3461 seems to be making an unabashed argument for caving to racism: "Employers don't like Asians, and if Harvard admits too many Asians, it won't be as attractive to employers. It will 'lose its edge.' So let's be careful that we don't admit too many Asians."
No, employers like diversity!
With regard to the paper's findings, the behavior is plain weird. I don't find it discriminatory in effect because it has close to no effect on admissions outcomes.
While Harvard is extremely lawsuit-conscious, I'm not sure I buy lawsuit-avoidance as the key motive. I think it's more just an indication of the weird, broken admissions system, full of random half-gestures without logical rationales. The gender balancing part is a perfect example of that.
Agreed. Strange that this is the finding taking off on the front page. It illustrates the obsession (by Harvard, by other schools, by the media) with acceptance rates more than it illustrates discrimination. In a normal world where rankings didn't give excessive weight to the acceptance rate, these letters wouldn't exist in the first place.
