   Honestly guys - I can't believe that I am looking at the posts of grown ups here.

   We are not applying to PhD programs anymore - this is the real world! All this whining about depressions and 0 phone calls is pathetic! I know that some of you have never had a real job before but you have to learn to cope with the stress and the underlying uncertainty. You're all smart and educated but reading all those anxious posts, formulated as if they were written by six year olds wanting a particular toy, makes me wonder whether all econ-aspies are girly little losers.

   Relax - don't let the butt-heads in this forum mess with you. You belong to an educated elite - behave like a real member of it and not like whiny baby poodles.

   Um...the economics job market has very little resemblance to how things work in the real world. I have been on the econ job market and the private sector job market, and how job market candidates are treated on the econ market would be condemned by most HR professionals. It is seriously bush-league, and they treat people in a remarkably unprofessional manner.

    If professors got pay-cuts in case of a wrong hire, they would care much more about reading the material. They now use hiring to keep their personal connections happy. Ranking students by Universities is the stupidest thing ever.

    I like this idea. Although, nobody would want to be on the hiring committee.

    Umm, I've also been on both markets and I can tell you the private market is equally if not more noisy. Part of the problem is that firms will literally receive hundreds of applications for a position. But most of it is the classic hold up problem--you under-invest in a specific relationship, else your bargaining position is compromised. So we end up in a situation where firms/unis under-research candidates and candidates under-research firms/unis and applying to too many, which worsens the noise and the matching process. Now in sectors where the stakes are sufficiently high (i.e. professional sports) the parties have designed contracts to get around this problem but aside from treating economists akin to sports players, I do not see how the present situation can be improved.

    Keep complaining - if that helps. You will get your interviews don't worry.

    You will probably stay one of those guys who keeps complaining about all the "overplaced" candidates. Don't be surprised if you meet them in SD and realize that they are better, more motivated and more mature than you are.
