   Maybe nothing changes for him in Europe. But in the US no one will want to openly associate with him. He won’t be invited any more, and journals will be leary of handling his papers. Maybe this does not matter to him directly, as he can just stay in Europe and live the grand life, but it will affect his students, colleagues, and coauthors.
