As a mainkander I am totally sympathetic to the HK people and I hate Xi more than many HongKongers.
But I can understand why he chose to do this (again not saying I agree with what he does). To the CCP, one of the biggest fear is through demonstration people throw of a government or achieve indeoendence. After the handover, rule of law in Hong Kong by and large was kept intact until last year. But the moment half a million gathered chanting for independence, you already know everything is over for the city.
Imagine the same happen in Beijing, you know there is no way Xi conceded to the demand.
Now if you recall, we really got into this for the quite petty extradition bill (I meant it is not like the CCP introduced it, it was mostly introduce to extract the murder from Taiwan). If the moment had split with the extreme side and the ones calling for independence, perhaps all of this could have gone a different way. Now it is too latw.
Anyway, you guys do have some sympathies among mainlanders. Calling people brain washed really is not helful for conversation, and not fair to people oppose. There are economic reasons why a mainland might not like a chaotic HK, as they might not internalize the value of freedom to you (again, why should they as a rational agent). Calling them brainwashed is both childish and unfair, and completely remove the possibility of a dialogue

The CCP has turned China into a Marxist atheistic country. I am from Southern China and my culture has been destroyed by the communists. That's why a modern Chinese is self centred and soul-less. My hope is to see China returned to her own people and our culture returned to us.

I feel sad to see HK (which is close to us but not really similar) being done by China but then again we all know that is going to happen.
I grew up listening to beyond, watching tvb sometimes, been to hk a few times and it reminds me of home. But I always felt the HKers are much more aggressive, competitive and brash than us. Although there is a fair bit of common ground in ideals and outlook of life.
