Nonetheless, Hong Kong before hand-back was a very special place. I lived there in the early 1990s, and it was a really amazing combination of Chinese and Western values and culture, incredibly cosmopolitan, sophisticated, full of energy and razor-sharp capitalists. It was a unique place, and it's very sad to think that all the things that made it so distinctive are in all probability going to be squashed out of existence by the CCP.
RIP Hong Kong
HK in the 1980s and 1990s was one of the 4 Asian Tigers along with Singapore.
In fact, it was probably a tad better than Singapore and offered (and still offers) a standard of living among probably the top 10-20 in the world. It is a city with amazing culture and history and a wonderful language (Cantonese).
Of the 3 original ethnic Chinese tigers, both HK and Taiwan have basically been fixed by China's economic statecraft. Their society and economy will be gradually reigned in while the Shenzhen/Guangzhou/Pearl River Delta/Yangtze economic hubs will replace them by 2050.
Singapore has escaped that fate. But human rights, human dignity, basic freedoms, and respect for one another has been instilled in most of us in the Asia Pac region (Japan/HK/SG/Aus) since we were young. I always support my HK and TW friends.
