ASSA should be renamed DEISSA
ASSA 2023 is a BUST
-
Without interviews, ASSA is just another conference at what is quite possibly the worst time of year: at a time when people especially parents are still recovering from the Christmas holidays, when flights can be cancelled due to winter storms, and when people are busy just before the semester starts.
Even if you were not interviewing, it used to be a place to network and meet with coauthors when everyone would go, but not anymore.Especially if you're not in the US.
There used to be people from everywhere, Spain to Canada, from Russia to Brazil. It was a real hub like no other.
But always a pretty high cost, financially and otherwise, for people having to take an intercontinental flight, sit for 10 job interviews if you're lucky, present, meet, get drunk. Right in the first few days of the year, sometimes in frozen hellscapes.
No one is looking forward to get back to that. As a conference there's much better to go.
-
This is on trajectory to become the Academy of management, where there are hundreds of sessions that no one attends in order to get as many people as possible to register for the conference in the absence of a real job market to boost attendance. They can't pretend this is nber. Too many universities won't reimburse expenses unless you're presenting at the conference
-
Useless now that it's decoupled from the job market
Yeah, fun to laugh at masks and pc nonsense, but the only two things this conference had going for it are the job market and the critical mass of people. Without the former, the latter will also disappear. Probably better if the wokiedokes wear the skinsuit.
