mask up and boost up
we're not out of the woods yet
Hahah. I have a card I carry with a jpg of a us flag, a bunch of dates scribbled unintelligibly and a bunch of lines with the word Phizer on it also unreadable. I then scribbled the name “Dr Tony Fowcheeeeeeee” on the signature line. And in real small print (think 2pt font) in bold italics is says what you can do to yourself for asking me for anything. Had worked all over the world.
Are you serious?

That's crazy. I had to take the booster because of the conference. Was planning not to.
The mask mandate is far more important to me. I won’t return until masks are not required.
I attended a "masks required" conference a few months ago. I was concerned that it would really hamper all the formal and informal eating/drinking/coffee events. In the end it didn't. People tended to wear their masks in sessions and then immediately take them off as soon as they stepped outside of them. That did make the masking in the sessions seem pretty silly, but it minimized how much masks detracted from the conference experience.
If I were confident that is how all "masks mandatory" conferences would operate, it would have a minimal effect on whether I attended. If I thought it would go a lot beyond that it would become more and more of a dealbreaker.
So I would be curious to hear about the actual on-the-ground of mask mandates at recent conferences, AEAs or otherwise.
Fair point, but kind of makes the whole affair look even more insane. People put on their dog snout or duck bill looking contraptions, but then remove them to speak or have a leisurely lunch. What is it supposed to accomplish, other than demonstrate the extreme willingness to accept inconvenience for catering to ingroup biases. And these are people that are supposed to go wherever the data takes them.

Good tweet from a finetheorem
(And yes, AEA definitely feels quieter than normal. For the love of God, AEA, stop destroying public goods - most efficient job market, cheapest field conference, most "neutral" field for policy advice - by making changes demanded by the 10% most neurotic/politicized economists.)
