    I assume it’s a mix of bad luck (I would guess that getting a job offer from a top 5 is quite random, especially when they flyout 10+ candidates for 1 position...), low demand for development econ this year, and preference for female candidates. In a normal year with more jobs, I can’t imagine places like Columbia, UCLA or Dartmouth making him an offer.
