You have no life. Once people finish their PhD they don't stupidly follow the ranking. They also consider the city where they want to live. With the current faculty mix at USC I'd pick it over all universities located in isolated places or campus towns like Cornell, Dartmouth, Michigan, etc. It doesn't mean that USC has a higher rank than these places (it doesn't), just that weighting faculty and living conditions, it's probably a better place to have both great colleagues and a nice life quality

This. Not many of the top 50 schools offer an attractive location as USC. That's it. No need to interpret it as revealed preference over a ranking of school.
I think departments who couldn't hire during covid and have dev/PE needs will make him an offer in 1-3 years, assuming he has 2-3 top 5s (counting R&Rs). Co-author thing might not be an issue (e.g., Sara Lowes and Eduardo Montero both got lateral offers despite only coauthoring with each other early on).
I think it'll be interesting to see what happens with Bergeron in five to six years time as he approaches tenure. That is when top places will probably come in for him, providing he has 4-5 top 5s and that he has some different co-authors on those papers.
