Best city to live in Texas?

The website you posted seems a pro-gun lobby group. Still, I do not necessarily question its gun statistics.
To clarify, I did not provide the gun statistics you claim to be fake in the first place. It was someone else, (ironically also criticizing my stand against guns).

The point is, California consistently reveals in elections stronger support for gun control than Texas.

If I had to chose one of these places to live in, it would definitely be California.
In fact, California sounds cool. Texas sounds like it would be... "Oh I went to Texas and unfortunately took years to get another position and escape there. How I wish I could have those years back!"

To me the bigger issue is the application of a stereotype to a large population. Go live in Austin for a month and see if you think it meets your characterization of “Texas”. It likely won’t.

Of course there are lots of rural towns where a combination of tradition, ignorance, and livelihood result in gun-positive norms. But these places are largely harmless and secluded from the rest of the state, much less the country.

The statistic I saw from USA Today (which could be woefully wrong I admit) said Texas is 28th per capita in firearm deaths. If you want to talk like living in Texas means your children are significantly less likely to come home from school, I think you need more than a partially informed bias against the politics of Texans.

But if you think that Vox is an authority on anything, I would expect you to be confused.
The issue of gun-deaths is irrelevant if murders substitute into other methods.
The US has a high murder rate compared to other rich countries, yes, but that was also true 100 years ago when no one had gun control.
Every country in the western hemisphere has a high murder rate compared to Europe and Japan. Even nice, peaceful Canada has a fairly high murder rate by Western European standards. Heterogeneous countries with frontier histories tend to have high murder rates.

Europe is not a country but a large set of countries. They all have different histories and levels of diversity. You should not see as an exception but rather as rule.

If heterogeneity caused high murder rates you would have them in Singapore, London, or Paris. If "frontier histories" caused murders by itself you would have to contend with the large difference between murder rates in Australia and Canada, which are low, versus the US. Furthermore, Australia introduced gun control with success, something the US could do too.

The US could change its gun policy if it wanted. And many in the country want it. Unfortunately, backward states, like Texas, want to keep the status quo.

Let's not be disingenuous. Compared to the US, their histories are similar to each other and they have much less diverse populations.

I didn't think that I really needed to explain that a room full of PhDs in econ from various countries is not likely to have a high murder rates. Are you really that slow? Or just ideologically committed to seeming slow?

In fact, if you examine the murder rates in London or Paris or New York by locality/area, you will see an extremely strong link with "diverse" populations.

If "frontier histories" caused murders by itself you would have to contend with the large difference between murder rates in Australia and Canada, which are low, versus the US.

I can’t/won’t dispute those statistics. I’m sure they are close enough. But the characterization from many of your posts sounds like you thought more like 10% of Texans support gun control.

As for Austin it is very different, especially as the more affluent move from other places to take advantage of the (formerly) cheap real estate. Austin is hyper liberal for Texas and moderately liberal for the country as a whole.

I think most stereotypes stem from some small piece of truth which is why it’s important to dig deeper. Harris, Dallas, and Travis counties all voted for Clinton in 2016. Keeping it away from specifics of trump/Clinton, I think most of the rest of the country would be shocked at that.

Texas has no state income tax and houses are 1/3 the cost of CA in a safe neighborhood with good public schools. ONE THIRD.

That means your after tax, after housing expense take home pay is 3x higher in TX compared to CA.

THREE TIMES HIGHER

Also Texas has 2x the number of public research universities as CA.

The average research university level academic with a family would much rather be in TX.

You seem like an articulate person so I would attempt an explanation.

Greece has now an extreme left-wing government and still about 10% of the electorate is neo-nazi. Some would be shocked about its government while others for those 10% extremists. Depends from where you look at it. None is enough for a Greek stereotype as either lefties or nazis, at least in my view.

Mature democracies around the world elect representatives with a wide spectrum of ideologies. You can find communists, socialists, social democrats, conservatives, free-market liberals (not the same as liberals in the US), christian democrats and even far right movements similar to Trump.
Despite that rich variety, the belief in "gun rights" just seems like an extreme oddity to almost everyone. You may look at almost 60% support for gun rights as nothing extreme. Well, for many around the world it is indeed enough to stereotype Texans as gun nuts. It is just so odd. Outside the US more than 5-10% of that kind of belief is just an oddity.

Even California is extreme for those worldly standards but we must give it the credit of being one of the least extreme places in the US. It shows it is a place a civilized person might settle.

Second, Texas did vote for a candidate that stereotypes everyone. Can you see that is kind of a "free for all"? a stereotyping party? Texans condone stereotype Mexicans as rapists and etc. Well, it is only fair to get a bit of that back. We can easily stereotype Texans as child murderers too.

Finally, when choosing a place to live people should well consider if they will feel well in that culture. Will they like the friends they make? Will the kids of your neighbors be a good influence to your own children. I am sure I would make some really nice friends in Texas if I went there. But no, not taking that chance. 58% is not normal and I don't want to interact in that environment more than just a few days at a time.

Let me let you in on a secret. Millions think just like this. Texas does not seem like a good idea.

Statistics on unconditional probability is meaningless.
People here are worried about the probability that tehy say something autistic that will upset people (high) and then they get shot because they pissed the wrong person off. Texas they want to pass laws like university students have the right to carry fire arms to class.
