   You guys are idiots. Math PhDs are essentially unemployable unless you are HRM. Lol at thinking you can get a good quant job with a non top 10-15 phd, unless you want to work in some crappy risk job
   Econ has far, far better prospects than maths or ohysics

   A math PhD carries much more weight in industry than econ PhD unless it's for econ consulting or litigation. An econ PhD is a light PhD and has a poor reputation among employers. A math PhD who knows some numerical anaylsyis, C++, probability theory, etc is highly employable.

   The majority of Econ PhDs could never work on buy side either and most certainly would have an awful time on sell-side. the only thing going for them is that the academic job market is much better, but that's mostly because econ is easy and students major in it. An econ degree, much like most econ PhDs, is a pretty useless piece of paper.

   I have been on the sell-side for several years. The most successful and highest paid quants I have seen, in both banks and hedge funds, have usually had degrees in math, physics or engineering (ee or much). Do know of people from other fields who have done quite well as well, but that is the exception rather than the norm.This only applies if by industry you mean a job in finance. This is because no one with a good Econ or finance phd would even consider working as a sell side quant. The reason why it's math and ohysics guys doing these jobs is because there are zero academic jobs, and almost nothing else the y can do on industry

   Let me just put it this way: the odds of getting a buy side job with a non HRM econ PhD are much lower than the odds of getting one as non HRM math, physics or stats PhD. An Econ PhD outside the top 10 is never getting a quant hedge fund job. A math, stats, physics PhD from MIT,Harvard,STanford,etc is most likely staying in academia, and the majority of these PhDs from a good school like say Michigan,Cornell,yale,etc who can actually work and communicate with others is essentially assured of getting a good job in industry.

   OP here. I go to a top five math, top five econ school. From what I gather, there are mixed feelings towards a mathematics/physics PhD. One of you said something about probability theory, C++, and numerical analysis—none of these are required courses (they're electives) or subjects taught in mathematics PhD's and, in fact, I have many many math PhD friends who have never taken even an undergraduate probability course. Furthermore, these courses you mention are usually more typical of an Industrial engineering or finance PhD. Just wanted to out that out there.

   But as far as industry goes, I'm clueless and frankly I don't care, there's no way I'm switching to math physics or engineering. I'm set on either stats, metrics, finance, or just econ and I would like to encourage a discussion about the different career paths that accord with these subjects at the DOCTORAL level.

    Re courses: I think that employers use it as a signaling device. If you get a math phd from Cornell it is probably the case that you signal that you have capability and necessary aspie willingness to learn c++'(and you probably will do it on ur own via Euler project or something). The same is not true for econ phd.

    Also, which top 5 school are you going to. Switching from econ to stats is very different at Stanford then at Princeton.

    The way it works is that you will get an interview. If they like you and think you're smart and capable, then they might hire you. After that, they will train you to do the job and expect you to learn quickly.

    Why not CS? Because i want to do something with some social application. I feel cs completely abandons identification and I just wouldn't feel intellectually fulfilled as a result

    Says Ameribro who does not know who runs Germany's and Switzerland's major banks and insurance companies, for example. But yes, in the US it might come closer to what you say, as you have the MBA as a more common route for high profile industry jobs.

    Yea, you're completely off. Many doctoral programs lead to non-academic careers, particularly in areas where academic jobs are scarce. Like statistics, mathematics, and engineering. Having a masters degree is no where near enough to be working on the most difficult projects in industry (eg. google, AQR, any bank, any insurance company).

    FYI, insurance companies have actuarial departments to do pricing and reserving. Hell, a PhD might harm your chances of getting an interview with the majority of insurance companies. You'll be seen as overqualified or won't fit into the culture of the organization.
