   So much bulls**t here. I am econ phd, wife is math phd specialized in finance (non us hrm so mrm)

   First, no econ phd is qualified for a finance job, but no math phd is qualified for econ jobs. My wife tried to apply for jokes, nope.
   If you wanna go to finance, you'd be stupid to chose econ.

   Secondly, math phd is not such a strong indicator. What you need is a math phd with the right skills. Interviews always include the heavy math, but if you didn't invest half of your time in finance you have no idea what the question even is.

   Heaps of pure math friends failed like ugrads in interviews because no one cares about your potential and smartness signal. Dont know programming, stats and finance? Enjoy having a f**king hard time finding a job.

   Math and physics Phd can be a great asset, but only if you already know where the journey goes.
   Everybody else does post docs and becomes essentially unemployable

   The math grad students itt are in for a shock if they believe all they need is a math phd document showing they are smart

   And dont get me wrong, it's perfectly acceptable to try for an academic career in math, but it ain't econ in terms of job market and salaries.

   A math phd is good if you are essentially doing a finance phd with an added marginal bonus which basically helps you right up until the first handshake.
   Otherwise it's not an advantage.
   I think the people spreading this misinformation about mrm math degrees know either only hrm math stars (sure), or, more likely, are actually ugrads and grads students who dont actually know anything about the mrm math phd market

   It's a very bad idea to get a math/physics PhD with the objective of landing a quant job.
   Unless you really like the subject, you are going to struggle to do well.

   I have hired quants from many backgrounds, but what we look for is strong mathematical skills and strong programming. A PhD is a nice bonus, but it's not necessary. A masters will often be enough.
   In terms of subjects, engineers/physicists tend to be better at the computer side of things than the math students.
   At the end of the day, despite all the glorification of quants, 90% of the time is spent working on the plumbing and only 10% on the engine (the model) which means that programming is key. I find that Econ/Finance folks tend to be weak either on the math or the programming. The 3 skills you need are: programming, math, finance, pretty much in that order. Given that, it's much easier to teach an engineer about finance than to teach a finance guy how to program.

   Again, if you are doing an econ PhD, what are you doing in the finance industry? It's not the economics departements of banks, it's finance. The people who somehow overlap econ and finance do not merit predictions on expected salary. People who do not overlap and get into real finance anyway probably are not representative either. And if you wanted to do a quant job, why would you do econ?

   As far as math goes, as I said above, there are some math phds who can leverage their education and research in the industry. But these people are basically doing finance in the math departement, like my wife. And then having a math phd does have advantages albeit small ones.
   The large majority of pure math phds I know fail the interviews for quant jobs when coming fresh out of university. Some recover and manage to get in, but many do not. There's a f**kton of math PhDs from LRM and MRM hanging out in some post-doc position because they are not really qualified for anything. Maybe you could teach them Finance, I don't know, but why bother? There's enough qualified people out there.

   I just wanted to say that the guys itt who are convinced that a math phd is inheritly more valuable have no connection to reality.
   Of course a HRM Math PhD in the field of finance and CS will be easy to employ. But so will be an HRM Finance PhD with the same skills.

   And please think of the unlikely case that you do not end up being a star in some abstract/high-brow yet possibly finance related math field. And maybe you don't end up being a star at all. Maybe the Math PhD makes you a huge aspie. Maybe you end up focussing on s**t that doesn't matter, because you don't know any better, or maybe because you figure out too late that there is no academic job for you. What if your university isn't really what Wall Street considers HRM? What if you bomb your first real quant interview because it is not in fact the case that you can skid by any question easily because you know a lot of algebraic topology. What if people take you less seriously than you thought they would? What if your math PhD, the premier achievement, ends up being a two minute talking point after which you have nothing else to contribute?

   I have seen this in a couple of cases. So ugrads itt, think wisely.
