   No offense but you come off as a complete striver and one of the biggest ills in the 'contemporary real economy' is way too many people like you.

   Imagine having all that job experiences as semi-prestigious orgs/firms then deciding to pivot back into a PhD program in 2022. That's just objectively poor decision making, full-stop.

   If you want to resolve the "ills plaguing the contemporary real economy" you should not be in academia as you'd only be contributing to said ills (or else you'd get fired very quickly).

   You're going to wholesale ignore what I mentioned because it probably goes against your view of the world but such is life.

   Felt the same in the beginning. Lack of industry experience from my peers made them look so naive. But you get used to it.

   Use your outside experience to identify gaps in the literature of the topics that you find interesting. Most academics have no clue about how things work outside their circle.

   Having said that. Without the minimum knowledge of the coursework you cannot perform good research.

    You find first-year economics courses "dry, not to mention pointless." You suggest that the whole field is dull and uninteresting. Perhaps, then, you can be a superstar by enduring the first year and producing interesting research from your second year. It must be easy for you to stand out, right?

    You are missing the entire point of discussion here. Outliers (or those who stand out) have a hard time surviving the Econ academia, let alone be a superstar.
    The so-called "academic superstars" are those who strictly stick to the culture and hierarchy of Economics discipline.

    Perhaps, then, you can be a superstar by enduring the first year and producing interesting research from your second year. It must be easy for you to stand out, right?

    OP here, trying to give more background:
    I have about 5 years of experience working in different spheres - Tech, Big4, and IOs. I absolutely love doing policy-focused applied research. Have two single-author publications in Tier-2/3 Econ journals and 1 co-authored paper in a Tier-2 Stats journal. Not a US citizen.
    I decided to do PhD when I saw that there exists a glass ceiling in these IOs/IFIs for non-PhDs and to be honest, part of me was fascinated with the concept of tenure and freedom over your research agenda that comes with it. But over the past 2-3 months, I am getting a sense that I might have a hard time surviving within the rigidities of contemporary Econ academic culture. And by "rigidities/dictums", I mean the condescending attitude the field has towards other social sciences (and their methods of analysis). For eg, research published in the Review of International Political Economy (a PolSci journal) is considered strictly inferior, sometimes, even unscientific to that published in JPE. In terms of understanding/policy guidance offered, I don't feel that's the case (and so do many policymakers in IOs I've met).
    So in terms of interdisciplinary flexibility, I am getting a sense, that post-PhD, an academic position at a Public Policy/IR/B-school or a technical position at some IFI/IO would align more with my disposition. However, from what I've heard, Public Policy and B-schools strongly prefer Econ PhDs over PubPol/Business PhDs when hiring APs. And that's why leaving the Econ PhD program feels quite risky.
    P.S. I cannot contest the observation that I'm probably short on humility at the moment (probably, a result of prolonged confusion and frustration - not an entirely tenable justification), and certainly need to develop an appreciation for the existing Econ literature/methods in either case.

    You’re not as impressive as you think you are. You are full of hubris. This is based on your self aggrandizing descriptions, even though you’re saying you’re at an MRM, which means you’re probably at an LRM.

    ITT people ignoring the fact that for policymaking an econ PhD is basically badge that makes people actually listen to what you say.

    Finish your phD so people think you know stuff in the policy world.
