Unlike Kilauea eruptions (with the exception of the peri1ous 1790 and 2018 Leilani Estates eruptions), Mauna Loa eruptions can become very dangerous due to the volcano's large size and relatively steep slope. During the famous 1950 eruption of Mauna Loa, lava flows raced downslope from the volcano (which has its summit near the center of the Big Island) and reached the coast within 3 hours. People in the lava flow's path literally ran for their lives.
