which is better gauge for academic potential?

Depends on the A-level. Sports science? Economics? Sociology? Fit only for the rubbish bin.
Maths, (especially if it's Further Maths), hard sciences and some traditional humanities such as History provide better guidance.

But SAT and A-level are fundamentally different kinds of screening devices.
