Basically, if you’re Chinese, you need to treat it like the meat grinder it is. If you’re not, you get a lot more flex in the system.

Probably. I am not at Chicago. I cannot believe there are schools who does not give an office to PhD students.
The thing I don’t get is this: I am at a way poorer and lower ranked school, in a way poorer department than economics. My office is shared with one other people (2 people in total) and we have a mini fridge and an AC even though the building is likely 100+ years old.
Chicago is a very rich school with many opportunities, better buildings etc. Why are students only getting desks and not offices? Why are they ranking students according their grades for a useless desk?Odd that it's much better to be a Chicago RA than PhD student

The document doesn't mention second years. The worse you did first year the closer you sit to the door, where it is noisier. Most second years, except best performing ones, who get separate tables, sit in a row and one can figure out how each student performed in the first year from the distance to the door.
