Is it true that they rank you publicly and assign the seats based on your ranks of your 1st year??

Dudes, people aren’t competing for good core grades in order to score a marginally better desk. It doesn’t really affect anything, and the grades are private. You only know vaguely the ranking from desk selection.
It doesn't sound vague at all if I can see who is sharing the desk. Those with sole desks are top performers, and those who are sharing are not. How easy it is to detect?

The thing I don’t get is this: I am at a way poorer and lower ranked school, in a way poorer department than economics. My office is shared with one other people (2 people in total) and we have a mini fridge and an AC even though the building is likely 100+ years old.
Chicago is a very rich school with many opportunities, better buildings etc. Why are students only getting desks and not offices? Why are they ranking students according their grades for a useless desk?

Probably. I am not at Chicago. I cannot believe there are schools who does not give an office to PhD students.

Happens at LRM and below. Probably some MRM schools. Seems very weird for a top 7 IMO.
