   The only case where it might make sense is if you were an Asian discriminated against by top schools and are PhD caliber, but your undergrad "brand" is insufficient to get you there. Still, it is better to go to a funded research masters that is a rung lower.

But a MAPPS student might not want to be a banker, data scientist, or whatever it is that you aspire to. S/he may like studying whatever and be able to afford the price of a Chicago education.

   Do you teach MAPPS or something? Or are you just trying to justify spending money on a MAPPS defree yourself? These are terrible arguments. "They may just like it."

   You can take advanced classes as a non matriculated student at your local public university while holding a job. It is a stronger signal.

   A research masters at a lower rung place is an underrated option, though if you can afford it, I agree with the above poster that MAPSS might be better. At the lower ranked place, you will receive better mentorship since professors there require research assistance from their stronger MA students to do scholarship.

   This is a real degree offered by the grad school. It's not Continuing and Professional Studies.

   If you can tell us where these funded research masters are, I'd really like to know. That's almost unheard of in the U.S.

Tufts, GMU, and other places in econ provide full funding. in CS and Stats and many engineering programs, it is very common to have your MS degree fully funded by a TA or RA. Canada has several funded MA programs that are decent.

    UChicago barely reacted to the AsiaBros who were shot in the south side of Chicago. So the brand is not a worthy cause for AsiaBros (unless they are undergrads or fully funded).

    MAPSS is roughly the same as taking an unfunded PhD offer, except you are not even guaranteed an admit in the PhD program. Large upside for UChicago if you pan out successfully. No downside for them if you don't

    None of this matters. Don't do a MAPSS. Don't do a PhD.

    Pick a programming language, one of C++, Java, Python. Devote your life to becoming a ninja master at that language. Surest path to making 400,000 a year if you didn't go to Harvard or Wharton undergrad.

    How much it costs is hard to say because there is financial aid. The idea isn't just to enter the PhD program at Chicago. Among other things, MAPPS gives you a chance to work with Chicago faculty who can write rec letters for you. MAPPS is for social sciences, not just econ. There's a lot of flexibility in what courses you can take. If you think becoming a programmer is a great idea, talk to recent graduates being laid off at Facebook, etc.

    That post didn't say "they may just like it." If you think it won't help you to become a banker, then don't go there. But you don't know what someone else's goals are. (Can't prove I don't teach at MAPPS but it's beside the point anyway.)

    Honestly a LRM econ masters is better because:

    A) The program is well defined.
    B) most pipeline to local jobs.
    C) it makes more sense when applying to econ programs with an econ background rather than A BS social science masters.
