Chicago profs pay attention to their paying Masters students as they pay attention to their paying undergraduates.
Chicago's MAPPS is Low IQ

It is obvious that the program is a cash cow for the school. If you are not good enough to get some PhD offers, even LRM ones, then the master's will not do anything for you. Expect to pay full price for a bunch of useless classes and don't expect good letters from faculty.
Actually, the same could be said of a lot of LSE master's. The EME still has some value because the coursework is PhD level, but it is also very expensive and most of the time unnecessary. Only do a master's in the UK if it is part of your undergrad (the "honors" track in the UK) or an explicit continuation of it (as in Germany where they split the old Diplom into BA + MA).
LSE MSc Econ (w/ EME Classes) and MSc EME are the only good MScs. I'd say even UCL MSc is better than MAPSS

Actively avoid working with ...? What are you talking about? They're not coauthoring a paper with you. You take their classes and, if you do well, ask for a letter - same as what a paying undergraduate would do. The typical professor can be expected to write one for you if you've been in their classes and they know who you are.
Those kinds of letters are useless
