White bro here. I love my junior asian bros, and it's rare that I butt heads with senior faculty asian bros. Here's an honest breakdown of what I've seen.
I think that both groups have struggled in this JM, but on average white bros are perceived as better teachers (quite possibly a very unfair perception), and asian bros have a competitive advantage at California schools. Yes, I am saying there is racial bias in favor of asians when asians run the hiring committee. It's rare and I'm not saying it's a bad thing - some of these schools are trying to pick people who they think will stay and asian guys are much more likely to remain in Cali than white guys from non-Cali states. My point is that each group has types of schools where they have a competitive advantage, but on average white bros typically have an advantage going in.
After talking with several people on hiring committees, the breakdown seems to be that there are stars, absolute no's, and everyone else in the middle. An asian bro who is marginally better than a white bro in research but is obviously not as good as a teacher will get ranked lower. Both candidates get blown away by diversity candidates in many cases.
