How is HKPU Finance Department doing compared to City University of Hong Kong?
Are people more productive in HKPU? Do they pay better etc?
How are their seniors?
CityU Finance has been hiring every year. Some of their rookies hit top journal publications. Actually, Chen Li grew up at CityU with several top publications here before he left.
PolyU finance serves accounting. In the recent REA evaluation (HK university research evaluation every 5 years), they tacked all finance publications under accounting.
For finance job seekers that aim at Hong Kong:
There are two groupings of schools (1) Seaside HKUST where you get access by bus and (2) Metrostationside CUHK, HKU, CityU and PolyU (let's just count the top 5 in HK);
HKUST is strong both in corporate finance and asset pricing. They have the reputation to hold high standard for tenure like one of top30 US schools. But recently they have lost a couple of heavyweight faculty and I am not sure if they can keep up with the past glory.
CUHK has legacy issue. Over half of their tenured faculty don't publish decently. Also, there is lack of hardcore asset pricing faculty. But things have changed since this year. With Kalok (one of the heavyweight faculty lost by HKUST) joining as the dean, CUHK will surely become a better place for rookies to grow.
HKU also had legacy issue but has finally climbed out of it if not completely. Their recent top journal publications are stanning. They have decent senior and junior layers after restructuring for a few years. They secured superstar Chen Lin. They are also able to recruit rookies already with top journal pub or R&R. In short, they have some edge in the job market.
CityU has CUHK and HKU as rivals in the job market. The three often have overlapped job candidates interviewed at AFA. CityU usually interviews more than do the other two. They have both corporate finance and asset pricing faculty publishing in top journals. Their median faculty seniority is a rookie and hence deadwood is not an issue there. But there is lack of stars unlike in the three schools above.
PolyU simply fly-outs candidates without AFA interviews. Recently they have started to emphasize research and try to replace many faculty that only teach. So this is a place that is expected to rise.
Hope the information above helps.
1. Polyu is already better than cityu in terms of recent pubs and senior hires. Some of their seasoned juniors there are also quite decent and will help polyu to rise in the coming years.
2. importantly, the quality of their seminar series has improved vastly and now it may be fair to say that they are now on the map.
3. Polyu houses finance department under the school of accounting and finance (with accounting head), who is well connected with top shots. It may be the best finance department if you plan to collaborate with accounting colleagues and/or publish in accounting top.
4. They count accounting pubs (not only top 3 but also 3 A-) in tenure decision. Arguably, this will make getting tenure at polyu much easier than a similar department like cityu or cuhk
