Columbia University planning to appoint Lisa Cook as president if she fails to

Packages 4.5 million (not bad)
https://www.bestcolleges.com/news/analysis/2021/05/08/highest-paid-university-presidents/The thing is, you don't need to pay a university president so much. There'd be plenty of strong candidates at far lower salaries. From a business perspective, universities are terribly run. So much waste.

It has nothing to do with effectively running the university as a business, it is about status among elite universities. Just like high tuition fees.

Just to be clear, OP's assertion is false. Let's not get outraged over stuff that is simply made up.
It suggests an intriguing next step for LC. After a couple of years, having brought inflation under control, she jumps to become a university president. Spelman maybe?

Would any decent Econ dept hire Lisa away from MSU?
Will the Republican Senators ask her questions that show how not-smart Lisa is, or how she does not understand much about macro?
Of course any questions tougher than “What is your favorite color?” will be described as racist.

“[Uhlig] is missing the point of her nomination,” added Alicia Sasser Modestino, an economics professor at Northeastern University. “Right now the Fed needs an economist who understands the economic history of Black innovation to build an inclusive recovery.”
Lisa’s paper about black patents is hopelessly screwed up and if anything shows she has no clue about the economic history of black innovation. Even if she did know something about the history of black innovation, why would that be relevant in setting policy at the Fed?

Demand supply. 1 President Uni only receives 10 applications.
But one AP position can receive 100 applications.
So President salary shall be at least 10 times higher than AP.
