   (S)he (AP) contributes nothing to our joint project, but has muddied the property rights enough that it is not feasible to submit the project sole-authored. This seems to be a pattern, rather than an honest mistake. As a result, I have slowed our project to a snails pace. Trivial tasks take me months. I keep the updates flowing just often enough that it is still plausible that I am working on the project, but infrequently enough that my coauthor is in constant doubt. The best part is that I actually finished the project months ago.

   I intend to take my trolling to the next level shortly and could use some suggestions from my ejmr bros. Should I fake submit the paper to journals and then start complaining about the unreasonably long wait times? Pretend the paper was lost in a computer hardware failure right before it was finished? My coauthor is up for tenure soon and this paper could be used as filler for an otherwise marginal case.

   Interesting, I am in a similar situation, also with a female coauthor, who turned out to be a complete free rider. She does not have a proper job yet, I do. What surprises me so much is that she does not realize that her returns to working on this are very large (could be her first top publication), and if she does not work on this her job market will suffer, because people will ask me, her most senior coauthor, about her. I finish the paper, and I keep her on it, but she will not see great returns from it.

   Of course my coauthor expects to eventually see a draft and even asks periodically, but (s)he is not in a position to demand one because (s)he knows that (s)he is useless. This is a serial predatory coauthor that I'm talking about. (S)he intentionally joins projects early, promises more than will be delivered, and then constructs excuses for delays. Typically the coauthor(s) in my position will just cut their losses and do all the work, but I am a stubborn SOB.

   I will never admit it was me in person. The post is vague enough that it does not reveal my identity. If my coauthor reads this post it will only add to my potential trolling avenues.

    OP, perhaps next time you should work on a project that you value for its own sake, beyond the role it can play to discipline coauthors.

    I do value the project, I just have a much larger discount factor than my coauthor. My large delays have already whittled away whatever benefit my coauthor got from conning me into the "collaboration" and I can continue to punish at almost no cost to myself while getting the added benefit of trolling.

    Pretty sure you are wrong on this. Also your method only worsens the problem. You should care about someone else's tenure decision, even though you don't like them. Attempts to hurt others careers makes you just as bad.

    Predatory coauthor detected. OP made it clear that his coauthor has made a career out of tricking people into doing his job for him. This person sounds like a fraud who doesn't deserve tenure. OP is potentially saving the coauthor's department from making a big mistake.
