Zoom seminars have their problems. But for the first time in years people are able to actually explain their research. The people who are mostly interested in showing off have a hard time doing that on Zoom.
Let's save a lot of time and money, and keep seminars on Zoom forever.
Those of us who know how to read do not in fact prefer a seminar that is effectively a recorded Youtube video. The point of a seminar is not "explain the results" for either the presented or the audience. It's to push the paper and the author to clarify technical and interpretive issues while still at the Working Paper stage. Zoom has been *much* worse for that (and I said that as a presenter as well - my Zoom seminars have been essentially pointless in terms of making the paper better.)
None of my Zoom talk have been useful. I can't manage to attract the attention of the people who do not like the paper so I only get nice and friendly questions. As my goal is to publish the paper it does not really help to get flowers I need criticism, even unfair.

I have never understood why people like seminars, it is much better to sit down with the paper and read it carefully.
Departments should stop recording seminars, it changes the atmosphere. Nobody wants to be recorded being critical or saying anything that can be perceived as harsh. Especially if the candidate or presenter is a wo.m.a.n or p.o.c. Do you really wanted to be called sexist or racist in the future?
A good seminar is actually a Q&A about the paper.
I say it in the least arrogant possible way, but when I was in [redacted], the best seminars where 20' presentation followed by more than 1 hour of q&a pushing the paper to the limits.
I will attend zoom seminars if we just read the paper and replace the talk by a 10' summary followed by a discussion.

It's great to be able to record the workshops to avoid the lulls for writing notes that later aren't readable anyway.You write notes for seminars....?
You don't write notes (or ask a student to write them for you) when you present?
Oh I'd thought you said you'd write notes as a seminar participant (which is lol...). But yes, if I'm the seminar presenter I will write notes.
