congrats! Would you think you would sometimes miss the academia, or the frontier research papers in the field which you have devoted a part of your life to?
What can we do to be happy in this rate race?
OP here again. I am almost using this thread as a diary. Sometimes I get hit again. I just saw that they hired someone else a lot more successful than me. It turns out they could really get someone better than me. It's a bad feeling. I'll try to stay positive, but just needed to vent out.
So I started a new job. It's not perfect and the salary is lower and there are other challenges. But I am not depressed anymore. It's amazing how academia causes depression.
I think not only academia causing depression. Industry could also make depression. In academia at least we have one (or two) semesters notice if University terminates our contract (except Adjunct). In industry the boss even could say "You are fired" in the morning and we leave the office before lunch.
This cuts both ways. In industry, one can easily switch jobs the next day if you don't like it.

Yes, Quick in also quick out.High risk high return also possibly :-)
A few years ago I would have taken this thread seriously. Now that I have seen the light, it really doesn't matter.
Academia is not what it used to be. Those who get tenure stay on the ship that sails into the downward spiral. Those who don't jump the ship and swim away. It's liberation.

cool
I am not getting tenure, and my colleagues and I know it, but I still have one year on my tenure clock which I need to work on my pubs before I go on the market again. I am depressed and my colleagues treat me like I have a contagious disease. Be nice to me.
Got tenure and still depressed!!
